Division of Hospital Medicine

The Division of Hospital Medicine encompasses a group of specialists dedicated to the general medical care for hospitalized patients. Hospital medicine, much like emergency medicine, is centered on location for care rather than a specific organ, disease or age.

Our hospitalists manage the clinical problems of acutely ill patients during their stay at University of Mississippi Medical Center hospitals and work closely with emergency department physicians, primary care doctors, surgeons and other specialists to provide efficient, quality care from admission to discharge. Because of their expertise in inpatient care and primary presence in the hospital, hospitalists are able to diagnose unusual disorders, anticipate problems and rapidly respond to crises or changes in a patient's condition.

Our division renders a wide range of services pertaining to patient care that involve diagnosis, treatment and various medical procedures. We also collaborate in the coordination of medical treatment with other medical specialties to ensure safe transitioning of patient care while in the hospital; and from the hospital to the home environment to provide the best quality of care.

Welcome from Our Division Director

Hospitalists are clinicians whose primary professional focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients. Their activities include direct patient care, teaching, research, and leadership in the adult hospital. Our hospitalists manage acutely ill patients' clinical problems during their inpatient stay at UMMC and work closely with emergency department physicians, primary care doctors, surgeons, and other specialists to provide efficient, quality care from admission to discharge. Because of their inpatient care expertise and presence in the hospital, hospitalists can diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions, anticipate issues and rapidly respond to crises or changes in a patient's condition.

Seema Mackenzie, MD; Hospital Medicine Faculty

"I have always enjoyed taking care of patients in an inpatient setting rather than an outpatient setting, so Hospital Medicine is the perfect calling for me.  Given the volume of patients, along with the wide range of pathology we see here at UMMC, there is no better place to be a hospitalist in the state of Mississippi. I am constantly learning something new, whether it be from my patients, the students and residents, or from fellow faculty."
